Reversing Course, Resuming Movement
Rosemarie has no doubts when it comes to her total hip replacement surgery at White Plains Hospital: "It's the best thing I ever did."
Rosemarie had undergone hip replacement surgery at another hospital in January 2024, "but I still couldn't walk without a cane. By August, my physical therapist at (Montefiore affiliate) Burke Rehabilitation said, ‘This isn't right. You need to get a second opinion.'"
That led her to Dr. Jakub Tatka, one of White Plains Hospital's orthopedic surgeons who specializes in hip and knee surgery. After reviewing a new set of X-rays, Dr. Tatka determined that her hip was so distended that her right foot wasn't landing correctly, exacerbating what she described as "massive pain."
In January 2025, Dr. Tatka conducted hip replacement surgery using the anterior approach, allowing her to go home the next day. She could finally stand without pain.
Rosemarie is now slowly getting her strength back in her hip and leg. "The muscles are ‘relearning' what they're supposed to do – it's like a rubber band snapping back into shape," she says.
"It turned out be a real group effort," she adds. "Everyone, including the nurses, was so attentive and on top of things. The entire experience was just amazing."
